From Istanbul in the east to Newcastle in England’s northeast, incredible scenes unfolded across Europe as the UEFA Champions League returned to center stage.
The evening began with a roar from the Lions, as Galatasaray stole the spotlight with a gritty 1–0 home victory over England’s most decorated club and six-time Champions League winner, Liverpool.
This was no fluke result. Galatasaray matched the Reds in nearly every major statistical category — while, of course, besting Arne Slot’s side in the manner that matters most: the scoreline.
Possession was essentially even at roughly 50/50. Both sides registered 15 total attempts. The attacking sequences were also comparable, with Liverpool producing 37 attacks to Galatasaray’s 32. Even the corner count was tight, with Gala edging the Reds 7–4.
In short, Galatasaray were worthy winners in Istanbul.
Meanwhile, Slot, Mohamed Salah, and company will have work to do when the tie shifts to Anfield for the return leg on March 18.
Following the Galatasaray–Liverpool clash came a trio of compelling fixtures: Atletico Madrid vs. Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta vs. Bayern Munich, and Newcastle United vs. Barcelona.
While Atletico and Bayern emerged as convincing winners in their respective ties, Newcastle gave the Geordies plenty to celebrate for more than 90 minutes. In fact, the Magpies carried a 1–0 lead deep into stoppage time.
Then, in the 96th minute, Barcelona’s teenage sensation — and 2024 Golden Boy winner — Lamine Yamal silenced St. James’ Park with a nerveless penalty that salvaged a dramatic late equalizer for the Catalans.
